Enabling Egyptian Exports by Technology-Transfer Driven Product Innovation – Part 1

This project aimed to diversify exports of Egyptian engineering products through innovation, technology transfer and product adaptation, with a specific focus on the EU market. The project was funded by the EU. Globally Cool joined a consortium with the Engineering Export Council of Egypt (EEC), ARCA and the Egyptian consultancy firm Innovety.

We have conducted amongst others a comprehensive market intelligence survey to analyse the potential of Egyptian engineering products in EU markets. The main purpose was to gain insights in opportunities for Egyptian engineering SMEs in the EU market, on both product and market level.

Activities

  • Globally Cool has developed a customised export potential model, which was been based on several criteria and indicators. Including;
    • Quantitative research, which consisted of conducting numerous statistical analyses for over 300 HS codes. These analyses were about the current exports of Egyptian engineering products, but even more comprehensively on the EU market trends of the last five years. In addition, this included an analysis of Egypt's main competitors and their performance in relation to Egypt in the EU market.
    • Qualitative input from sector and market experts. We conducted interviews with several EU experts and buyers to obtain more in-depth information on current trends of the Egyptian engineering sector and export opportunities for Egyptian engineering companies to the EU market.
    • Co-creation with consortium partners in Egypt and Italy.

Results

  • A selection of 50 Egyptian engineering products with high potential for exports to the EU markets. Of these 50 products, 30 are already exported by Egypt, while 20 of them are white spot products (products Egypt does not export yet to the EU).
  • An overview and prioritisation of the corresponding most promising EU markets. For each of the 50 products, the highest potential EU market has been determined separately.
  • A comprehensive analysis of challenges and good practices for Egyptian engineering companies for exports to the EU, based on in-depth interviews with four market and sector experts.
