Agricultural export development for Colombian SMEs
This project was delivered by Globally Cool under the Expert Deployment Mechanism for Trade and Development (EDM) program. EDM is managed and implemented by Cowater in collaboration with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC). The initiative aimed to enhance the export capabilities of Colombian SMEs in the agricultural sector, particularly in regions affected by conflict and poverty. Engaging 83 SMEs through a series of targeted activities, the project prioritised inclusivity by focusing on businesses led by women, Indigenous peoples, and other underrepresented groups.
Training sessions held across four regions equipped participants with tools and strategies to navigate the Canadian market, covering export readiness, sustainability standards, and market entry requirements. In addition, one-on-one coaching supported 12 SMEs in refining their promotional materials, pricing strategies, and digital presence, providing them with practical skills to thrive in international markets.
The initiative also facilitated direct market connections, organising 40 virtual meetings between SMEs and Canadian buyers. These interactions allowed businesses to validate their products and strengthen client engagement strategies. A Train-the-Trainer workshop further expanded the initiative's impact by equipping 21 officials from 10 organisations with resources to support underrepresented SMEs, emphasising the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable trade practices.
By integrating gender equality, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability into its approach, the initiative not only delivered immediate results for participating SMEs but also laid the groundwork for lasting economic opportunities and inclusive growth in Colombia’s agricultural sector.
