Going Down Under – Lars’ Adventures in Australia

September 12, 2016

GOING DOWN UNDER

During the second half of August, I visited Australia to meet and interview potential buyers of functional foods and alpaca products. This trip was part of a market study for PROMPERU, the main export support organization from Peru. In order to support Peruvian suppliers in developing sustainable export supply, Globally Cool helps PROMPERU with identifying buyers of the above mentioned sectors.

THE FACTS…

Interesting facts were discussed during these meetings, such as the particular landscape of the Australian grocery retail market. With over 80% of market share, just two main players dominate the industry: Woolworths and Coles. This is affecting the whole supply chain, as high margins demanded by these retailers make it an extreme tough market for food importers, distributors and wholesalers. Regarding alpaca products (like homewares and apparel), it was interesting to learn that a lot of Australian companies are starting to explore other markets (mainly Asia) to increase their businesses.

THE ADVENTURES…

Besides the meetings, I had some time to enjoy the wonderful country. I even took selfies with kangaroos in the wild, spotted whales at Jervis Bay and visited the beautiful beaches of Bondi, Coogee & Manly. Furthermore, the open and social culture of the Aussies resulted in great times during the weekends. An experience to never forget!
