Export quality management training for wine sector in the South Caucasus

Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are home to numerous vineyards and winemaking companies. Some say it is the birthplace of winemaking. While the winemakers have considered Russia their traditional export market for years, the exporters also consider the European Union as an interesting target market. In that perspective the German PTB invited us to deliver a training on export quality management to 20 highly motivated Georgian wine professionals.

We delivered a two-day training session for various representatives of quality infrastructure institutes along with Business Support Organizations from Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. The representatives were trained on the ins and outs of European market access requirements. They learned how to support their members in getting access to the European and other new markets.

Activities

Among the activities are:
1. Preparation of the training material and customization for the wine sector.
2. Training during the 2-day workshop in Tbilisi. The workshops consisted of a mixture of presentations and assignments. We guided the participants in:
• Identifying the main quality standards impacting on their export potential, most notably the standards of the OIV.
• The use of key sources to find the relevant quality-related information they need.
• Determining where they stand at the moment through self-assessments and improvement plans.
• How the quality infrastructure and business support network can help the wine producers in the region.

Results

The participants improved their understanding of requirements in exports markets. Also, they got an introduction to relevant tools to get information on these requirements. Through the workshop, the trainers shared information and advised the participants on legal and regulatory issues in main export markets in Europe.

Last but not least, through gathering the Business Support Organizations and quality institutes in the same room, they got a better understanding of how they can collaborate, support each other and the private sector.
