Cool visit to SIAL in Paris

SIAL 2016 Paris

Every even year, Paris is home to the world’s largest food innovation exhibition: SIAL. For me it was the first time to visit the vibrant city of Paris! At the very cool speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour I arrived in Paris already in the afternoon of Sunday 16th of October. So I had some time to practice the French phrase “Respirer Paris, cela conserve l’âme”, or in other words: Breathing Paris preserves the soul” (Victor Hugo).

After visiting the Louvre, Notre Dame, Jardin du Luxembourg and the Eiffel Tower of course on Monday, the SIAL visit was there on Tuesday, 18th of October. SIAL is held at the Parc des Expositions de Villepinte and occupies all 8 halls. The companies are either grouped in country pavilions or arranged by themes such as frozen products, confectionary, and health & organic food. I was quite shocked to see so many visitors and exhibitors at one event; there were so many companies and products to see, from so many countries!

Together with my colleague Warner I went to see the country pavilions from Peru and Vietnam in the first place, as Globally Cool has several projects in these countries. In the country pavilion of Peru we experienced the wide variety of exotic kinds of superfoods, from camu camu to golden berries and so on. The Vietnamese pavilion was small but offered some surprises. For example, one Vietnamese supplier of pickled vegetables already exports to several European countries and also supplies to Aldi Nord. These pickles are even 100% organic grown!

We spent the whole day of cruising around, watching trends and talking to exhibitors. The day after, I went to visit the fair by myself with a particular focus on dried prunes. I got some good insights into the global prunes market and the competitiveness of Serbian prunes suppliers (which is also one of Globally Cool’s projects).

Visiting SIAL was definitely an amazing experience; it was very interesting and educational to see what kind of products are produced and exported from all over the world. Getting the opportunity to visit such a great international food industry event was absolutely worth the pain in my feet.
