The Ghana Experience – one week working at GEPA
The first week of April 2017 offered me a lot of opportunities for ‘first times’. By traveling to the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) in Accra, I was able to for the first time:
- visit and enjoy Ghana, its culture and people
- perform training and coaching sessions with local employees
- experience the daily work of an export promotion organization
- cooperate and coordinate in the development of a trade portal ‘on the ground’
After setting foot on African soil on Sunday evening, we had some time to acclimatize before our working session would be starting on Monday. Driving from airport to hotel, it did not take long before noticing the chaos in traffic. The roads are always full of people and, personally, I never knew what was going to happen. This made our trip to the office a true experience every single day.
Starting on Monday with the briefing session, the commitment of all management staff and belief of the new GEPA trade portal and its large added value was great to notice. The employees also reflected this enthusiasm. Actually, during the whole working week every single project member showed his or her willingness to learn new things and produce good quality work.
Besides the great production of work that was done this week for the development of the trade portal, it just was a lot of fun working together with our friends from GEPA. It gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about the Ghanaian people, its culture and their way of life. Furthermore, the multiple laughs we had this week definitely confirmed that sense of humor is something that is going across borders!
Overall, the Ghana experience was great to learn, enjoy and experience a week of working abroad. Hopefully, many of these weeks will follow!
